Things You Don’t Think To Do Before Your Next Flight

When it comes to flying, many business travelers may already have a solid pre-flight routine to prepare for the chaos of the airport. Even when you’re a vet, there are always ways to improve the process. Here are some steps even the most experienced travelers may not have thought of.

Pack for Post-Flight

Going through the airport and sitting on a plane for hours can leave you feeling disheveled and messy. This is not ideal when you have somewhere important to be after you land. Pack a lint-roller to spruce up your outfit, deodorant and perfume/cologne to freshen up and a face toilette or moisturizer to refresh your skin. For ladies, packing make-up remover and make-up for touch-ups is essential (especially if you’re prone to dozing off in-flight). These items will have you saying “What flight?” when you get to your destination.

Organize

Don’t mess up your carefully packed carry-on at security by failing to organize your bag well. Make sure your laptop is in an easy-accessible location. Keep any liquids in your bag in a Ziplock bag in a front pocket. Any items you need to remove at security should be easy to pull out and put back in, letting you zip through the line and to your gate without scrambling.

Shoes and Underwear

Pack extra shoes and underwear in your carry-on. Extra shoes so you can wear your comfortable ones that are easy to slip off through security, and have your nice ones to put on post-flight. Pack extra underwear because delays, cancelations and lost baggage happen. Don’t be caught without any clean clothes in these situations.

Make an Offline Playlist

Many music services, including Apple Music, stream your music online to save space on your phone. Don’t forget this fact as you’re up in the air and get stuck listening to the coughs and cries of your neighbors. Download your favorites before your flight so you can access them on airplane mode. If you’re a frequent traveler, create a calming playlist that is the length of your next flight; the hours will fly by as you’re listening.

Download a Book

If you prefer to read on your flights, you may pick up a book at one of the stands on your way to the gate. Or if you’re a tablet reader, you can choose from a much wider array of options online for a good read. Unless you purchase WiFi, you can’t download a book in the air, so download one before you go — or at the gate as you wait to board.

Hydrate and Fuel

This one seems counterintuitive if you hate airplane bathrooms, but at 39,000 feet and low humidity your body can get dehydrated. One little cup of water from the flight attendant won’t cut it; pick up a water bottle after clearing security. Many in-flight meals are overpriced and under-appetizing. Pack your own snack from home to avoid this struggle.

Now’s the Time to See Giza, the Nile and Beyond

All archaeology-obsessed eyes turned hopefully toward Egypt earlier this year when the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum outside Cairo finally began welcoming visitors after construction delays, funding roadblocks and political upheaval in the region (among other factors) conspired to keep things delayed for many long years. The museum’s cherry on the top is slated to open this summer, with the July opening of the museum’s 20-plus-years-in-the-making Tutankhamen galleries and accompanying cache of some 5,000 artifacts and treasures from the boy king’s tomb.
