On Aug. 18, American Airlines announced a massive transformation across its narrowbody fleet, including adding state-of-the-art seatback entertainment screens at every seat and greatly expanding its most premium and spacious seating options.
“We’re making one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history,” said Heather Garboden, CCO, American Airlines. “From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey.”
Last October, American Airlines added premium economy on transcontinental routes between Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK). But more changes are on the way…
American Airlines passengers can expect more first-class seats, with the airline’s Airbus A319 and A320 fleets currently being retrofitted to add an additional row of seats. The airline’s upcoming deliveries of the Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft will feature 24 first-class seats, while the Airbus A321neo fleet will also be reconfigured to include additional first-class seats.
The airline will also retrofit the majority of its narrowbody fleet to expand the number of Main Cabin Extra seats, providing even more access to extra legroom, earlier boarding, dedicated overhead bin space and a complimentary beverage. Refreshed interiors entail more storage, redesigned seats and enhanced lighting, too.
Every seat on all new Airbus and Boeing aircraft deliveries starting in 2028 will also have seatback screens, which will be among the largest displays offered on narrowbody aircraft in North America, with large-format premium displays; 4-K technology, including brilliant color, contrast and clarity; and expanded content and partnerships, with access to a broad selection of movies, TV, music, games and content.
Tailored movie and show recommendations, as well as interactive, enhanced flight maps with destination information and real-time flight insights, will also be available. At every seat, passengers have access to USB-C fast-charging ports and Bluetooth audio connectivity.
The addition of premium seating and seatback screens marks the latest in the airline’s ongoing investments to modernize the travel experience for customers. Other recent and upcoming customer-focused enhancements include unprecedented lounge investments, such as elevated, regionally inspired menu offerings by award-winning chefs; the largest investment in new and expanded Flagship and Admirals Club lounge footprints in the airline’s history; and the expansion of the grab-and-go Provisions by Admirals Club concept.
American Airlines will also install Starlink on its narrowbody aircraft beginning in 2027, and curated onboard menus featuring world-class brands like Champagne Bollinger and Lavazza coffee are also slated to debut across the airline.
The airline plans to enact extensive digital upgrades to streamline the travel journey, from initial booking and bag tracking to arrival.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
