Once an abandoned 1923 constructed warehouse in Asheville, North Carolina, it took a creative group of designers, artists, musicians, chefs and business folks to transform a neglected, 100-year-old structure into one of Asheville’s most interesting and daring hotel projects.

Opened in late 2023 in the city’s vibrant River Arts District, The Radical has become a new destination for locals and visitors who appreciate its artsy vision as well as its culinary scene. The historic property offers 70 incredibly unique guestrooms and suites, and so much more.
Owned by Atlanta-based real estate development company Hatteras Sky and operated by Lark Hotels, The Radical is more than just another new boutique hotel. An unexpected collection of spaces, personalities and art-filled hotel rooms reflect the independent artistic communities of Asheville, a town of 94,000 residents nestled within the mountains of western North Carolina.

Inspired by Asheville’s avant-garde RAD district, this contemporary property is like a living art installation that breathes new life into a former industrial neighborhood, with lots of old factories and warehouses now turned into cafés, restaurants, artist studios and retail shops. With interiors by the hotel design studio Suomi Design Works, there are towering, raw concrete pillars; exposed brick walls; and original street art ranging from decades ago to current work.

The Radical is popular with both foodies and design students. Its two restaurants — Afterglow and Golden Hour — serve as a culinary journey in and of itself, introducing original dining and bar concepts by Asheville chef and restaurateur Jacob Sessoms. Classic cocktails are served from a racetrack-style full bar in the middle of the dining room. The hotel also offers The Roof, a free-spirited, social place where activities include dining, drinking, dancing, watching mesmerizing sunsets and views of nearby French Broad River.

When the two of us entered The Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo, past the backlit boutique items and local artisan-painted wood carvings, the place wrapped us in a feeling of tranquility. Its stone walls, earth tones, woven wall hangings and furniture made of natural materials reminded us we are part of nature’s spectrum, the abundant windows showing native plants and trees outside.
