For those looking for a last-minute winter trip, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska should do the trick. Originated in 1973, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual long-distance race from Anchorage to Nome. Beginning in early March, mushers and their teams of 16 dogs race to the finish. The fastest race, recorded in 2011, lasted eight days, 19 hours and 46 minutes while other competitors completed the race in nine–15 days — bundle up, get a view from the sidelines and cheer on the pups.
