With the advent of self check-in, self luggage drop and electronic boarding passes, travel is becoming more automated, removing the need for airport personnel and long lines. Another new technology undergoing airport testing around the world is self boarding, a process that involves scanning facial features to identify passengers and allow for a more seamless boarding experience.

To participate in self boarding, passengers visit kiosks near the check-in desks to scan their passport, boarding pass and image of their face. Once scanned, passengers pass through security as they normally would. At their gates, travelers re-scan their boarding pass and allow machines to take photos of their faces. If the facial features in this photo match those from the facial scan, the process is complete and passengers are allowed to board when the time comes.

London’s Gatwick Airport has tested the process for easyJet flights to destinations around Europe. So far, this is the only European airport that adopted the technology.

Meanwhile, British Airways has tested the feature at airports in Boston (BOS) and Orlando (MCO) since the beginning of the year, with plans to expand testing at New York’s JFK International Airport and Miami International Airport.

When conducted appropriately, this boarding process cuts boarding time in half, creating the possibility for fewer flight delays and happier passengers. Using the technology allows airlines to board 240 passengers in just 10 minutes.
