What’s fall without roasted chestnuts? The weekend of Nov. 8–9 sees the annual Feira da Castanha (Chestnut Fair) taking place in the hills of Marvão in Portugal’s Alentejo region. The country’s largest celebration of the chestnut tree and its fruit, the festival coincides with the chestnut harvest, and features regional dances, photography, street theater, concerts, plus plenty of tasty chestnut treats, flavored wines and liquors.

Elsewhere, Lisbon’s Museu Cloacae Berardo, located along the Praça do Império
 in Belém at the Centro Cultural de Belém, has great reasons to plan a cold weather escape to Portugal’s capital. Through Feb. 1, 2015, the exhibition, An Infinite Conversation: Artists’ Books, Ephemera and Documents, reveals a fascinating selection of books and posters from the Teixeira de Freitas Collection, all exploring ways art can be expressed — and how surroundings have an impact. Once your intellectual appetite has been dealt with, head around the corner to the historic Pasteis de Belem for tea or coffee and creamy, traditional custard cakes sprinkled with cinnamon.
