Late last week, Thai Airways International announced, despite certain reports, the airline is not in danger of shutting down.

The announcement follows news reports Thai officials classify as misconstrued. The original statements, given in a meeting with Thai Airways personnel, were intended to stress the competitive nature of the airline industry and the airline’s position in the market.

“In an era when customers have so many offers on hand with fierce airline competition, employees were asked to join forces and work to beat the competition for the inevitable achievement of improved operational results,” a release explaining the statements said.

Thai Airways operates a wide-reaching network domestically and abroad, serving 11 destinations in Thailand and 63 international destinations. The airline flies to the Middle East, Europe and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region.

Sumeth Damrongchaitham, president, Thai Airways said in a statement his original comments, made during a training session at the airline’s headquarters, were widely misconstrued.

The original statement, according to reporting from the Bangkok Post, argued if things didn’t change, the airline would be forced to close its doors. Northern routes where the airline once reigned supreme are now dominated by low-cost carriers.

According to previous reports from the newspaper, the airline posted a huge loss in the first half of 2019.
