Take Off for Turkey

Turkey is seeing a turnaround in tourism, with visitor numbers steadily climbing. Plan your visit to include these sites:

  • Located near the village of Kayadibi between the Black Sea and central Anatolia, The Virgin Mary Monastery in northern Turkey reopened following an extensive renovation. Built within a natural cave, the four-story monastery contains 32 rooms and was in use during the second century A.D.
  • Take a Full Moon Walk among the fairy chimneys in the city of Cappadocia. The walks depart at sunset with various routes in the region’s valleys. One of the most popular begins in the Kızılçukur Valley and ends in the Meskender Valley. Along the way, take a peek into the valley’s historic monastery and participate in the traditional Turkish line dance known as halay.
  • Recently awarded a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Aphrodisias Archaeological Site in southwest Turkey can be found in the upper valley of the Morsynus River. The site’s two sections are the ruins of Aphrodisias and the marble quarries located a short distance northeast of the city. The temple dates from the third century BCE, while the city, built a century later, has a street pattern arranged around temples, an ancient theater and two early bathing complexes.
  • Far newer and shinier, the debut of the Hyatt Centric Yalikavak Bodrum (the first Hyatt Centric resort in Turkey) will take place in mid-2019. The new resort is located close to the open-air shopping mall and entertainment complex in Bodrum, and is near the five-gold-anchor Palmarina Bodrum marina.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
