April is National Garden Month (April 14 is National Gardening Day), and you can get into the growing groove with horticulture classes offered at botanical centers around the country. No worries if you don’t think you have a green thumb — there are classes to suit every level of gardener, from enthusiast to pro, including lectures and symposia.
At New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, educational tracks include Plant Production, Sustainable Land Management, Arboriculture and Sustainable Garden Design. On April 20, there’s Fundamentals of Gardening in the evening; on April 22, you can take an Apple Grafting Master Class with Sam Van Aken. Classes also include Botanical Art & Illustration and Therapeutic Horticulture — a science-based exploration of the enduring link between plants and people.
Adult programs at Denver Botanic Garden include certification programs in Herbalism, Beginning Market Farming and Rocky Mountain Gardening, all taught by area experts. If you’ve always longed to explore gardens through art, the School of Botanical Art & Illustration offers a wide selection of classes, including instruction on the creation of scientifically accurate depictions of the world of plants.
Chicago Botanic Garden’s horticulture programs take place at Regenstein School of the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. Choose from classes in beekeeping, shade gardening, container gardening, pruning workshops and edible plants. Instruction is also offered in bonsai care and vegetable gardening in small spaces.
In Boothbay, Maine, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens provides opportunities for advanced studies in professional horticulture, including building resilient landscapes, with one-day workshops and training seminars such as Native Plants for Profit and Productivity. There’s also an online Green Spotlight Series led by plant experts, landscape practitioners and land stewards.
Adult Education workshops and classes at Fort Worth Botanic Garden in Texas explore a wide range of topics related to gardening in programs, including Botanical Arts & Crafts, Food & Wellness, Botany & Nature and Horticulture and Gardening. Expert advice and guidance are part of the experience, and the adult education programs are supported by partners such as Tarrant County Master Gardeners Association, Fort Worth Audubon Society, Fort Worth Garden Club and Fort Worth Bonsai Society.
After you’ve selected a class, pack your own Portland Apron Company Farm Apron from Cribsi. These sturdy organic cotton canvas aprons are up to any planting or pruning challenge you may be presented with. They come in a selection of botanical prints, stripes and solids; each come with two super roomy pockets, a separate pen pocket and adjustable straps. We promise you’ll look like you know exactly how to re-pot an orchid — even if you can’t tell an orchid from a sunflower.
