El Hierro, the smallest and perhaps most remote of Spain’s Canary Islands, has claimed the title “Smartest Island in the World.” The nomenclature is a reference to the island’s new WiFi network.
With 26 WiFi hotspots in prime locations including cities and main tourist attractions, the network provides easy-access connectivity throughout the island. Signage in Spanish, English and German identifies each hotspot. Users can download an app — El Hierro Te Sigue — on their mobile devices to identify the locations of the free hotspots.
Camouflage, in the form natural materials like volcanic rocks, was used to minimize the visual impact of the WiFi antennas on the island landscape.
