Ante up $5 and the world of on-demand movies is now yours for the taking on all WiFi-equipped Southwest Airlines aircraft. The carrier announced the new entertainment option (applicable per-movie-per-device) in concert with an upgrade to its in-flight television programming.
Southwest, the first airline to stream live television directly to passengers’ personal devices, now offers select on-demand episodes of popular television shows in addition to its eight-channel line-up of live news and sports available on WiFi-enable planes. A $5-per-day-per device charge applies.
The upgraded television package is $5 a day, per device on WiFi-enabled planes.
All Southwest Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft are now equipped with Row 44 satellite technology that enables the entertainment programming. Looking ahead, all new deliveries and AirTran conversions will enter service with the satellite technology installed.
In addition, WiFi service is available at a cost of $8 per day, per device including all stops and connections. Passengers are not required to purchase WiFi in order to access movies or TV.
