Domestic and foreign airlines in the United States carried a record number of passengers in 2016, surpassing 2015 by 3.5 percent. U.S.-serving airlines carried a total of 928.9 million domestic and international passengers, topping the 897.9 million in 2015.

Southwest Airlines surpassed American Airlines as the top U.S. carrier to transport the most passengers in 2016, according to the Department of Transportation.

Southwest flew more than 151.7 million passengers last year alone, up from 144.6 million in 2015. The 5 percent increase in the carrier’s passenger volume propelled the airline ahead of American, who fell 1.6 percent between 2015 and 2016 to 144.2 million. American Airlines’ 2015 data included flights on merger partner US Airways, now fully integrated into American’s operations.

Delta Air Lines increased passenger volume by 3.2 percent, falling short of American with 143.1 million travelers. United Airlines’ passenger volume rose 5 percent to top 100 million passengers for the first time, allowing the airline to hold onto its fourth spot.

Other U.S. carriers flew significantly fewer passengers. JetBlue posted a 9 percent increase but only carried 38.2 million passengers. SkyWest carried 31.2 million passengers, followed by Alaska Airlines’ 24.4 million, ExpressJet’s 22.2 million, Spirit’s 21 million and Frontier’s 14.8 million. Spirit saw the largest increase in passenger volume at 19.1 percent while ExpressJet carried 14.7 percent fewer passengers in 2016 than 2015.

American Airlines continues to remain the top international airline serving the United States, followed by United, Delta, JetBlue, British Airways, Lufthansa, WestJet, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic and Air France. Among foreign airlines on flights to and from the United States, British Airways flew the most passengers.
