Southwest is making some changes, including adding free movies and testing out new boarding procedures.
Travelers flying on WiFi-enabled planes can now access a library of free movies on their personal devices, including laptops, smartphones and tablets. Southwest previously charged a fee to watch movies on its Inflight Entertainment Portal. There are around 30 movies available, but travelers need to download the Southwest app to get them.
The airline, known for its open seating policy, is hoping to speed up its boarding and deplaning by testing out a new procedure at several airports in California. Southwest is allowing passengers to board and deplane using the front and rear exits.
Those who leave from the front use the air bridge as usual, while passengers leaving from the rear descend stairs and walk across a section of tarmac. Passengers with heavy bags or mobility issues can still opt to walk out of the front of the plane.
