Qatar’s Hamad International Airport is undergoing significant changes in order to integrate new technology to become the newest ‘smart’ airport. Aiming to create an airport for the fully independent traveler, the new technology will allow for self-service throughout the entirety of the process, from check-in to boarding. The airport says these efforts will create an efficient, fast and more enjoyable travel experience.

“HIA continuously and proactively focuses on its people, processes, technology and partnerships with key stakeholders to provide world class service, as recognized by the industry. The latest passenger processing and security technologies are either already deployed or being trialed to maintain and boost our position as one of the best airports in the world,” said Badr Mohammed Al Meer, COO, Hamad International Airport.

Some of the airport’s technological advances already in play include its usage of home-printed bag tags, self-service check-in and self-service bag drop. Passengers will also soon have the ability to purchase excess baggage, flight upgrades and lounge entrance when using a self-service check-in kiosk. The airport currently has 63 automated border control e-gates that streamline the immigration process using biometric and travel document verification. Self-boarding gates are also being explored as a new option.

“These technological advancements at key passenger touch points will take passenger experience at HIA to greater heights,” added Al Meer. “They will also allow the airport to be better connected to its passengers and provide need-based assistance.”
