“Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and im-prove the quality of life of patients and their families.”

That’s the mission statement of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Overwhelming goals, certainly, but the enormity of the undertaking only serves to inspire the doctors, researchers and advocates who devote their time and energy to finding a cure for blood cancers. Founded in 1949, LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. Since its inception, the society has invested more than $550.8 million in research specifically targeting blood cancers.

Still, every five minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, these patients have reason to hope they will emerge triumphant from their battle. In addition to funding life-saving research, the society also provides financial assistance to patients, sponsors scientific conferences, produces educational materials and coordinates support groups.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society spokesperson Ivana Trump was the guest speaker at Global Traveler’s GT Tested awards gala (see page 27). In a heartfelt address, Trump reminded those gathered — many of whom made generous donations to this year’s silent auction — that while tremendous strides have been made in preventing and treating ociety, which does not receive federal funding, relies onblood cancers, there is still much work to be done.
