San Francisco International Airport announced plans to expand and improve security checkpoints in its departures hall. Expanded checkpoints are able to accommodate 33 percent more screening lanes for a faster, more comfortable process for travelers. The expansion is due for completion in February 2021. New checkpoints feature 10 security screening lanes and are outfitted for future conversation to automated screening lanes. The project is part of a larger $152 million upgrade.
“As we continue to elevate the quality of all facilities at SFO, we are excited to launch this project to improve the security screening experience in the Mayor Edwin M. Lee International Departures Hall,” said Ivar Satero, director, San Francisco International Airport. “This project will both improve the current process while also paving the way for future improvements and innovations in security screening.”
The airport reports international passenger traffic increased by 46 percent over the past five years. The two checkpoints due for expansion screened more than 7.5 million travelers in 2019.
