A recent Senate report calls for a government crackdown on ancillary airline fees, such as ticket changes, preferred seating pricing and cancellation penalties, that are often hidden from customers.
According to information from The Associated Press on the report, there appears to be little or no connection between the price of service fees and the costs incurred by the airlines that impose them.
“The traveling public is being nickel-and-dimed to death,” said Senator Bill Nelson, the panel’s top Democrat, in a statement on the study’s results. “What’s worse is that many fliers don’t learn about the actual cost of their travel until it’s too late.”
Between 2007 and 2014, annual revenues in the two major categories of fees U.S. airlines publicly report, including baggage and change/cancellation fees, have significantly increased, from $464 million to $3.63 billion for baggage fees and from $915 million to $2.98 billion for change and cancellation fees.
Among the criticisms is the random price of checked bag fees. “For example, many airlines charge a fee for a second checked bag that is substantially higher than the fee for the first checked bag, even though there appears to be no cost justification other than increased profit for doing so,” the report said.
The report recommends the Department of Transportation, which has the ability to investigate “unfair or deceptive” practices in the airline industry, look into exactly what consumers are paying for and require a standardized disclosure chart highlighting frequently charged ancillary fees that could be associated with a specific ticket.
