With the recent, highly anticipated debut of La Guardia Airport’s Terminal C in summer 2022, the question over whether other major airports across the country will receive similar upgrades remains unanswered. We’ve all encountered an airport where we’ve thought, wow, this place needs a facelift or this airport could have a more streamlined process. Well, 2024 promises some major upgrades to popular and busy airports.
Los Angeles International Airport is currently in the midst of a multibillion-dollar investment program, now in its final phase. Slated for completion this year, LAX will include an automated people mover designed to take passengers between stops outside the airport as well as terminals within. The airport is also undergoing work to Concourse 0; major road improvements; and will soon have a consolidated, off-site facility for all rental companies. In fact, the new facility will mark the largest car rental facility in the world when it’s completed this year. These upgrades and more will be timed to prepare for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
A new main terminal in Portland International Airport is slated to open in 2025. This billion-dollar project will include wider corridors lined with trees and local restaurants and shops.
Salt Lake City International Airport is now in its second phase of development of a few new concourses and gates. Slated to finish this year, this phase follows the first in 2020, which saw a new parking garage, terminal and two concourses.
Also slated for 2025, Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal, now under construction, will, when open, include outdoor terraces both before and after security checkpoints.
The Great Hall at Denver International Airport is currently in the middle of an upgrade. In the midst of phase one, the upgrade will see new ticketing areas for Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. Once complete, phase two begins with plans to add a new security checkpoint.
A brand-new international terminal will soon come to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Set to be completed this year, Mickey Leland International Terminal will provide more seamless travel for international passengers.
John F. Kennedy International Airport is currently in the midst of building a new international terminal. Construction broke ground in September 2022 and plans to open in 2026, replacing Terminals 2 and 3. Looking ahead, a new mega-terminal will replace Terminals 6 and 7.
Other airlines expecting or currently undergoing upgrades include Dallas Fort Worth International Airport with a new, 15-gate Terminal F; Orlando International Airport with a new Terminal C and technology improvements like facial recognition; and Kansas City International Airport with a new single terminal spanning more than 1 million square feet.
