Seattle-Tacoma International Airport completed the first phase of its North Satellite Modernization Project earlier this month. Alongside Alaska Airlines, the airport unveiled eight new gates, expanded retail and dining and a new Alaska Airlines lounge.

The 255,000-square-foot extension features more open spaces, natural light and views of the surrounding scenery. New retail and dining options reflect Northwest culture and favorite brands. A new nursing suite suitable for multiple users at once opens in August, with high-end finishes and a spa-inspired design.

“The old North Satellite worked for 45 years and worked well, but it’s become a living time capsule. We are now headed into the future with a stunning facility that improves the passenger experience with more space, light, and services. Alaska, Seattle’s hometown airline, is a perfect partner to grow with Sea-Tac,” said Stephanie Bowman, commission president, Port of Seattle. “Built by Pacific Northwest businesses and residents, this project brings economic opportunities in construction as well as for airport dining and retail businesses, including small, local and disadvantaged entrepreneurs.”

The North Satellite seeks LEED certification with its sustainable construction and operations. The space makes use of 100 percent LED lighting and efficient heating and cooling systems.

The new Alaska Airlines lounge is the third at the airport. With nearly 16,000 square feet of space, the lounge offers views of the Olympic Mountains and downtown Seattle, a Northwest-inspired design and complimentary drinks and bites.

All operations in the North Satellite transitioned to the new space and the remaining gates are closed for renovation.

“Alaska is dedicated to our guests and to our hometown, and as Sea-Tac’s largest airline we are proud to invest in this global hub for air travel through efforts like the North Satellite Modernization Project,” said Andrew Harrison, chief commercial officer, Alaska Airlines. “This type of smart growth sets a new standard, and will redefine Alaska’s guest experience from start to finish … ”
