Quirky Santa Fe’s expansive, world-respected art community has grown with the addition of Meow Wolf, a new multi-use art and entertainment complex within a space that once housed a bowling alley. Inside the 33,000 square feet of interior space and across the 2.6 acres of land, visitors will find the House of Eternal Return, a permanent exhibition with 70 separate immersive spaces appropriate to all ages that can be climbed, walked or crawled through without set pathways. Creation of the exhibit, which includes an interactive cave system, four tree houses and 100 hours of experience inside, involved the work of 75 artists, computer programmers, builders and storytellers. Along with rotating and permanent exhibitions, there’s also an arts Learning Center, offering CHIMERA affordable arts education curriculum to youth; Makers Space, community working space for artists fitted with tools, resources and workshops; Project Space, where emerging artists can showcase their work; a gift store featuring merchandise and works created by local artists; a performance venue for evening events; plus a coffee shop. The parking lot is also exhibition space, currently featuring a 30-foot robot by artist Christian Ristow, and artist Christina Sporrong’s giant spider TaranTula. Outdoor art markets, community festivals and other events are also planned for this outdoor space. The Meow Wolf complex is open from 10 a.m.–8 p.m., and closed Tuesdays.
