Canaveral Port Authority partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Brevard County Natural Resources Management for a critical shoreline preservation project. The historic investment of $41 million is 100 percent federally funded and marks the sixth iteration of the ongoing federal initiative to mitigate downdrift erosion.

The USACE Sand Bypass Beach Renourishment Project will remove sand buildup from the northside of the Port Canaveral entrance, then funnel it through submerged and floating pipelines to beach placement areas south of the port. The program aims to conclude before the start of sea turtle nesting season.

“This important project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has restored miles of beaches over the past several decades while ensuring the continued safe navigation of our harbor,” stated Capt. John Murray, CEO, Port Canaveral. “The Space Coast is world famous for its beaches, including our own Jetty Park, and Port Canaveral is proud to support the continued efforts of this important and ongoing federal initiative.”

To ensure public safety, beach access is restricted in active construction zones, but remains open elsewhere. Sand ramps over shoreline pipelines, placed every 200–300 feet, will allow easy access for beachgoers, as will signage about the project.

The museum’s cherry on the top is slated to open this summer, with the July opening of the museum’s 20-plus-years-in-the-making Tutankhamen galleries and accompanying cache of some 5,000 artifacts and treasures from the boy king’s tomb.

On the Road

As I write this letter, I am halfway across the Atlantic Ocean on my return from an epic golf trip in Ireland. The weather was magnificent: sunshine and no rain ... quite unusual by Irish standards. We were happy to leave our rain gear and extra warm clothing in the hotel rooms as we headed out every day.
