Since 2013, San Francisco International Airport hosted a trained therapy animal program, but this year the facility added its first pig.
The Animal Assisted Therapy program, named the Wag Brigade, founded in December 2013, has more than 300 cats, dogs and rabbits. The animals, trained by the San Francisco SPCA, are chosen for their temperament and suitability in airports.
The Juliana breed pig, named LiLou, is the first therapy pig in a U,S. airport. The almost two-year-old pig is found in costumes around the airport, greeting passengers with her friendly personality to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe.
“Since its launch in 2013, the SFO Wag Brigade has become a favorite amenity among travelers,” said Christopher Birch, director of guest experience, San Francisco International Airport. “With the addition of LiLou, we can look forward to more moments of surprise and delight for guests at our airport.”
LiLou and the rest of the animals wear vests that say pet me, encouraging passengers to interact with them as a way to sooth nerves and help those with fears associated with flying. LiLou also shares her love at local senior centers and hospitals.
