Safety First: Mastering the e-Bike on Your Travels

In many respects, electronic bikes (a.k.a. e-bikes) reinvented the wheel. Though you can ride them as you would any other bike, that extra shot of electricity-powered adrenaline gives riders a boost in scaling hills, riding on challenging terrain and gaining enough speed to stay caught up with a group.

The appeal is unquestionable as many resorts and hotels have made them available as a complimentary guest amenity or at a small fee. Rental operations, meanwhile, have proliferated around North America and the world.

However, there’s a very big caveat: Just as one should master the right way to operate a car or a motorcycle, the same holds true for e-bikes. This is why several safety programs are also gearing up, including some available free of charge and others for a nominal cost providing thorough do’s and don’ts to ensure one can remain in control behind the handlebars. California Highway Patrol and PeopleForBikes, in partnership with the League of American Bicyclists and Bicycle Colorado, recently launched online e-bike safety and training programs for new and experienced cycling enthusiasts.

An important thing to always keep in mind is e-bikes are heavier and faster than standard bicycles. Without the proper safety education and training, riders have a higher risk of accidents and injuries, even if personnel at bike rental shops go over the use of the models they have in stock.

According to preliminary data from CHP released this year, among the 9,600 bicycle-involved crashes in 2022, roughly 225 of those crashes involved an e-bike, including four which resulted in fatal injuries. There are also common-sense tips, from wearing a helmet and safety gear to reading up on different models as they will vary in weight capacity, battery life and portability. Riders, whether they plan to own one or rent one, should also be up to date on local rules and regulations where they will be planning to ride.

Istanbul-based adventure travel blogger and advisor Yulia Saf (a.k.a. Miss Tourist) offers other useful tips to ensure the most trouble-free experience possible:

  • Research reputable rental companies: Ensure you choose a reliable rental company that maintains and services their e-bikes regularly.
  • Prioritize biking etiquette: Follow local biking rules and etiquette to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience
  • Know your safety gear: Do your homework on specific helmets and gear whose designs work best with e-bike safety.
  • Adjust speed settings in unfamiliar terrain: Be cautious when riding in unfamiliar or challenging terrain and adjust your e-bike’s speed settings accordingly to prevent accidents.

With some physical and mental preparation, you can be assured your future e-bike rides will be both safe and charged up for a day of adventure.

Explore an Enclave Steeped in Authenticity Just Outside of Ubud

The verdant hills, rice terraces and serene temples have long attracted visitors to the island of Bali, where incense perfumes the air and raindrops scatter with an almost spiritual significance on city sidewalks. Today many visitors decide to stay, taking up residence in the now expat-centric hub of Ubud. The district was once the spiritual capital of Bali, but, in just the last five years, the desire for trendy cafés playing chill lofi music, craft brews and nightclubs has driven out many locally owned shops in central Ubud.

Bio-und Wellnesshotel Stanglwirt Review

The history of western Austria’s Stanglwirt stretches back to the 16th century, when a small tavern catered to miners stopping for a drink after long shifts. Today, it’s far from its modest beginnings, sprawling in scale and catering to a considerably different crowd, but you’ll still find heaps of heritage everywhere in this forward-thinking property that treasures traditional Tyrolean hospitality.
