It’s a big month for new service announcements. Here are some highlights announced in the past few weeks.
During 2019, American Airlines will add 19 new routes, many of them linked to the carrier’s Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) hub. Daily, year-round regional service begins March 3, between DFW and Augusta (AGS); Gainesville (GNV); Yuma (YUM); and Meadows Field Airport in Bakersfield, California. On April 2, Flagstaff (FLG) and California’s Hollywood Burbank Airport get year-round service from DFW, while Monterey, California (MRY), gets seasonal service from DFW. On Feb. 14, new daily service begins between Washington Reagan National Airport and Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City; between New York’s LaGuardia Airport and McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville; and between New York (JFK) and San Antonio International Airport. American also plans new international routes from various airports to Cuba, Aruba, Mexico, Honduras and Dominican Republic. More details here.
British Airways announced twice-a-week, summer service between Charleston (CHS), South Carolina, and London Heathrow Airport. Flights will operate Thursday and Sunday and fly April 4–Oct. 24, 2019. The route, served by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, will be the first trans-Atlantic route for Charleston International Airport.
Why Charleston? In part because Boeing is building 787-10 Dreamliners at its factory in Charleston and British Airways is in line to take delivery of a dozen between 2020 and 2023. More details here.
On May 23, 2019, Delta Air Lines will begin seasonal, daily, non-stop flights between Boston Logan International Airport and Edinburgh (EDI), Scotland, using a Boeing 757 aircraft. The route will be the eighth nonstop trans-Atlantic destination from Boston on Delta and its partners during the summer 2019 season.
United Airlines also announced a suitcase full of new service, including non-stop between Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Hilton Head, South Carolina (HHH), beginning March 2019 and between Hilton Head and both Newark (EWR) and Chicago (ORD) in April 2019. Elsewhere, Lufthansa begins flying five times a week between Austin (AUS) and Frankfurt (FRA), Germany, May 3, 2019 (details here); Alaska Airlines begins daily, non-stop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and El Paso International Airport, and between El Paso and San Diego International Airport in February 2019 (details here). And KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will fly three times a week between Amsterdam (AMS) and Las Vegas (LAS) starting June 6, 2019 (details here).
