Tucked on a quiet side street one block east of bustling North Michigan Avenue and one block west of scenic Lakeshore Drive, the Residence Inn nestles beside an urban landscape of modern, high-rise buildings. As we drove up to the hotel, securing a valet spot was a breeze. The lobby had been recently renovated and construction was underway for a new restaurant, scheduled to open this month.

The staff was friendly and efficiently checked us into our 19^th-floor, wheelchair-accessible studio suite. The guestroom contained a queen-sized bed; small table for two; and a stocked kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, two cooktop burners, dishwasher, sink, and coffeemaker. A large, flat-screen television was tucked into a corner and swiveled to allow viewing from the bed or sofa. One of the best features of the suite was the sofa sleeper. Most hotel rooms with a roll-in shower typically only have one bed, problematic for families or those traveling with a companion.

Eager to explore Chicago, we strolled down the Magnificent Mile, sampled a cupcake from Sprinkles and saw exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago — all are within walking distance of the hotel. On several occasions during our two-day stay, we required the use of our car. The valet staff was extremely personable and expeditious. Cost for parking is $60 per day.

The extended-stay hotel with 221 suites provides complimentary WiFi, an on-site coin-operated laundry, free grocery shopping service, workout center and complimentary newspaper. In the lobby, guests can grab a cup of coffee throughout the day and even late into the evening. A large outdoor patio on the ground floor is a relaxing place to unwind.

One perk we did not expect — since each guestroom has a kitchen — was the complimentary full breakfast, provided at a restaurant across the street while the hotel is under construction.

Travelers who want more space than a typical hotel guestroom and the amenities of a home will find the Residence Inn a comfortable option. The hotel is especially good for a business traveler on an extended stay or families visiting the Windy City.
