A new WalletHub report continues the Sisyphean task of attempting to definitively rank airlines. A new study compares airlines in seven categories, from best overall to safest and everything in between.

Many studies evaluating airlines use price-comparison tools to come up with data. WalletHub’s new study combines price-comparison stats with data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This data measures airlines in terms of baggage, departures and complaints, animal incidents, in-flight comfort, cost and safety. The study evaluates data from 2018 to give consumers an idea about which airlines are worth flying this year.

The study compared the nine largest carriers in the United States and three regional carriers.

The best overall and safest airline is Alaska Airlines. The cheapest airline is Frontier, while most reliable goes to Delta Air Lines and most comfortable is JetBlue Airways. Pets fare best on ExpressJet Airlines and Envoy Air. Passengers complained least about Southwest Airlines and ExpressJet Airlines.

WalletHub also consulted experts to ask about ways in which airlines could potentially increase passenger satisfaction in the future. Answers range from increasing space and complimentary checked baggage to imploring airlines to install seats with more pitch and more comfortable seats.
