A new report from Cruise Lines International Association confirms cruising in Asia is still on the rise after years of continued growth.
The report includes many numbers to contextualize the state of the cruising industry in Asia. Throughout this calendar year, Asia will host 1,917 sailings, accommodating more than 4.02 million passengers. In terms of total passenger capacity, this is a 5.7 per cent dip, which, according to the report, stems from fewer offered short-term cruise options from mainland China.
Total passenger capacities are down, but destinations on offer in Asia are increasing. Three-hundred-and-six destinations are on offer this year, while 288 were available in 2018.
Ports of call to Asia remain steady, with 7,154 calls scheduled this year, while overall, the industry is expecting a slight boost to passenger destination days, with 13 million scheduled for this year.
“The popularity of cruising in Asia is expected to grow further over coming years as cruise lines deploy new, larger vessels that have been purpose-built for Asian consumers. The coming generation of ships will replace older ships previously based in Asia, and when coupled with new cruise infrastructure in several Asian destinations are expected to fuel strong interest among travelers,” said Joel Katz, managing director, CLIA Australia and Asia.
The entire report is available to read online.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
