Quito, Ecuador, continues its recovery from April’s magnitude 7.8 earthquake that killed almost 500 people and injured more than 4,000. The city has seen improvements to its tourism infrastructure, including new hotel openings. In May, the city celebrated the opening of the 146-room Wyndham Quito Airport Gran Condor, located in the Mariscal Sucre International Airport. The hotel features a restaurant, bar, pool, health and fitness spa, and four meeting rooms. Within the next two years, the San Patricio Hilton Hotel should open outside of Quito between the airport and the rural Cumbaya district. Other upcoming properties include the Eurobuilding Express Hotel, the Royal Green Hotel and the 130-room Ibis Hotel on Diego de Almagro and Bello Horizonte streets from Canadian company Accor. Quito’s Metropolitan Convention Center is currently under construction in Bicentennial Park, a space previously the city’s international airport. The complex will sprawl 26 square miles and will include event venues, hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment. Quito is gearing up to host Habitat III, a United Nations global summit on sustainable urban and housing development. It’s scheduled for October and will bring in an estimated 30,000 international attendees and heads of state.
