On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain announced they were severing diplomatic relations with Qatar and closing air, sea and land access, greatly affecting travel.
Details are still unfolding as to why the cut-off happened, but recent reports suggest Russian hackers may have sparked the crisis, reporting Qatar supports terrorist organizations and maintains close ties to Iran.
The sudden announcement creates confusion for travelers, particularly for air travel as Qatar is surrounded by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain — all of which banned flights to Qatar. Major long-haul carriers such as Doha-based Qatar Airways and Dubai’s Emirates suspended flights, leaving many passengers stranded at Gulf airports.
All flights in and out of Doha are forced through a limited airspace over the Gulf, heading toward Iran. Qatar Airways announced on its website it stopped flights to Saudi Arabia, and Emirates and Etihad Airways suspended flights to and from Doha. Passengers flying through Doha’s Hamad International Airport hub are advised to contact their airline before heading to the airport. Qatar Airways will temporarily offer a charter flight to carry its passengers from Saudi Arabia via Kuwait (KWI) to Doha.
FlyDubai, Air Arabia, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Gulf Air and Egyptair also cancelled flights to Qatar.
All airlines offer full refunds on unused tickets and free rebooking to alternate cities to customers booked on flights to and from Doha.
At this time, it’s unclear how long the disruption will last. Those traveling to, from or through Qatar are advised to contact their airline prior to going to the airport for updates. See below for contact information for airlines implicated by the recent event.

Apr 17, 2024Amansara Review
It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
