The Qatar National Tourism Council began a large-scale project to refurbish a fleet of more than 40 traditional dhow boats, part of an initiative to improve service excellence across Qatar’s hospitality sector. The three-phase project includes the refurbishment of the dhows, the modernization of marinas and jetties, and health and safety training for crew members and boat drivers.

Forty licensed dhows, used historically for pearl diving, fishing and transportation, will be upgraded to enhance the guest experience while maintaining the traditional exterior. The dhows will be environmentally friendly, have solar energy, replace diesel fuel and use LED lights. When complete, dhows will take visitors on scenic journeys.

“We are taking every measure to ensure that each dhow is carefully refurbished to a standard befitting their importance to our culture,” said Mohammad Al Ansari, director of tourism licensing, Tourism Development Sector. “Dhows are a wonderful asset to Qatar and once the project is complete, they will provide guests with yet another enjoyable way to experience Doha from the water.”

Marinas and jetties will feature comfortable waiting rooms and new ticket offices. In the final phase, crews will be fully trained and certified. The project is projected for completion by October.
