Qatar Airways announced plans to aggressively grow its fleet with an order for 50 Boeing 777X aircraft and purchase rights for an additional 50 aircraft, the largest single aircraft order in the airline’s history. Production is set to begin in 2017, with first delivery slated for 2020. The aircraft features the latest technologies, including the most-advanced commercial engine — the GE9X by GE Aviation — and an all-new high-efficiency composite wing that has a longer space than the current 777.
“Qatar Airways continuously builds upon its successful fleet program, and this latest announcement demonstrates our investment in quality equipment to deliver our signature 5-star service,” said Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways. “The Boeing 777 is a key component of our fleet and we look forward to building on this with the next-generation 777-9X.”
The Gulf carrier currently operates a fleet of 134 aircraft to 144 business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America.
