One of the many great things about Portland, Ore., is its abundance of neighborhood theaters, many of which reside in historic buildings that serve great food and local beer.

Now there’s going to be one in the Portland International Airport. One of the city’s historic theaters, the Hollywood Theatre located in the Northeast neighborhood, is opening a miniature satellite location at the airport.

The theater will seat only 18 viewers, with standing room for another 10 to 20. They’ll show short films, typically one to five minutes long, as well as occasional live performances, all likely to be less than 20 minutes due to the transitory nature of airport travel. They’ll work to spotlight local filmmakers and artists, as well as cover topics relating to the state of Oregon.

All shows will be free, and the theater will open sometime this spring in a 650-square-foot former business center near Gate C5. “Our concept in there is making a really comfortable environment that is acoustically separate from the airport. We really want you to feel like you’re in a theater space, but not miss your flight or trip over luggage,” Rick Potestio, project architect, told The Oregonian.
