Despite New Mexico’s lack of coastline, pirates nevertheless found their way into the state. At the Farmington Museum & Visitor Center, a new exhibition titled “Shipwreck! Pirates & Treasure” will be on view through February 2018. More than 500 shipwreck artifacts are included, with gold and silver from famous wrecks including the Tortugas, discovered in 1989; the famous Civil War ship the SS Republic; and the SS Gairsoppa, notable as the deepest shipwreck recovery of precious metals to date.

The exhibition of treasures is supplemented with hands-on activities, passenger accounts, historical artifacts, children’s activities, a gallery of pirate legends and interactive experiences including a robotic arm used in treasure recovery, and a hurricane simulator that produces winds up to 75 mph — allowing visitors to experience what storm tracking involved before modern technology was introduced. The Farmington Museum & Visitor Center is open 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday, with extended Saturday hours 8 a.m.–7 p.m. for the special exhibit.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.
