Famous as the location of that clever canal, Panama is a fascinating destination on its own. See the luxurious side of the country with a stay at El Otro Lado, located waterside in the tropical forest of Portobelo. A member of Design Hotels, the small property is big on comfort: five bay view villas (one, two and three bedrooms) form a private retreat within a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage site setting. What to do? Partake in an arts class and learn about painting and wood sculpting, hike in the rain forest, go bird watching, take off on a river or mangrove expedition, or stay close and enjoy paddle boarding, water skiing, inshore fishing and diving, or just wind down with a picnic on the beach.
The property works with the Portobelo Bay Foundation, a local rhythm school, and the Congo Arts Centre and Carpentry Workshop to create authentic guest experiences. There are plenty of options to simply relax, including indulgent spa services. Rates (per accommodation for two guests per night) through Nov. 30 begin at $490 for the Forest & Sea House and the Casa Grande. Higher rates apply to the Sun House and Spirit House. All rates include boat transfers to and from Portobelo and El Otro Lado, breakfast in the Gazebo Restaurant, plus complimentary WiFi.
There’s an aspirational rustic chic/farm-to-table restaurant genre often associated with Northern California’s wine country. When you drive down the main street of Napa, Sonoma or any of the other towns, it appears there are as many of them as there are vineyards. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this genre, as the quality of the food is consistent and ambitious chefs earnestly endeavor to elevate home-style dishes to a higher standard.

Without a doubt, the pandemic changed the role of airports in the travel industry. Hamad International Airport’s role evolved in many ways since the pandemic hit. Now, more than ever, airports are responsible for creating a secure passenger experience. As the gateway to Qatar and the world, the safety and wellbeing of staff and passengers has always been at the core of Hamad International Airport’s strategy.
Cathay Pacific Airways and the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF announced the Change for Good in-flight fundraising program raised a total of HK$1.56 million, or about $200,500, over the 2020 program period.
During the 1990s, domestic and international travel increased dramatically in almost every region of the world. But when COVID-19 hit the travel industry in early 2020, airport managers gazed at empty terminals and parking lots and either stopped all construction work or took advantage of the suddenly quiet, traffic-free landscape to speed up expansion projects. For many airports, working through the pandemic meant they were able to complete their new runway and terminal projects, which included installing colorful new artwork that greeted millions of passengers in summer 2021 when TSA lines and flight schedules returned to pre-pandemic levels.

This is a tale of two visits, one when I was just coming for a late lunch by myself and the other time returning as a five-night guest. The hotel used to be the jewel in the Kessler crown, but since the opening of JW Marriott Plant, it feels like the Mansion is an afterthought. Check-in and valet service are always superb at the Mansion; when I was there as a restaurant guest, I had a “big old pickup truck” — well, not old, as it was a rental from Hertz — and I could not have received nicer treatment. In fact, the pickup was out front and remained there as I had lunch — no charge, either! As a guest, I still received very kind care, but service was slower; maybe more people were there. Check-in was swift, but water seemed to be at a premium, and we had to secure this from the front desk daily — which I felt was inconvenient. I often found myself running down to secure a few bottles at the end of the day. The hotel has some impressive artwork throughout which is really interesting and helps set a fun mood.
