NYC Partners Announce 2016 Chinese New Year Festival

Daily

The second annual Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China will come to New York City in February 2016, thanks to a group of prestigious partners announced last week. Included are the New York Philharmonic, National Dance Institute and New York School of Interior Design, who will be assisting the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and the U.S.-China Cultural Institute with their previously successful endeavor.

The 2016 festival will take place Feb. 5–10 and events will be held at several of the most notable New York City landmarks, including the Empire State Building and Lincoln Center. The 2016 Chinese New Year will be the first time the day is recognized as a public school holiday for New York City students, giving children from 75 different schools the opportunity to participate in a performance of Chinese dance at Lincoln Center and Javits Center. In addition to the events’ focus on Chinese arts and culture, there will also be a conservation theme to help raise awareness about the endangered Golden Monkey.

The opening concert will include music from Grammy winner Tan Dun with performances by children from the National Dance Institute. Other highlights include a week-long Chinese art exhibit at the Jacob K. Javits Center, featuring young Chinese artists and several contemporary favorites. There will also be a fireworks show on the Hudson on Feb. 6, accompanied by more of Tan Dun’s work. On Feb. 9, the New York Philharmonic will hold its Chinese New Year Concert and Gala.
