Nova Star Cruises, the operator of daily cruise ferry service between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Portland, Maine, partnered with Gulf of Maine Research Institute to raise awareness of lesser-known varieties and underutilized types of seafood abundant on the Gulf of Maine, but rarely seen on restaurant menus.
The Out of the Blue program launched by Gulf of Main Research Institute in 2012. As an official partner of the program, Nova Star Cruises pledged to feature one of the five sustainably harvested fish species on the menu of its fine-dining restaurant Currents at all times. The types of fish include Acadian redfish, Atlantic mackerel, cape shark, whiting and Atlantic Pollock.
Nova Star Cruises is one of 10 participants in the program, and its on-board chef and management consulted with GMRI to create a sustainable food policy and implement the program. Nova Star Cruises secured contracts for fresh fish with regional suppliers in Nova Scotia.
In conjunction with the cruise-activity enrichment series, the GMRI’s sustainable seafood project manager came on board Nova Star to present on the importance of continuously improving sustainability in the seafood industry.
Nova Star departs daily from Portland every day at 8 p.m., returning the following day at 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 13.
