Travel to North Korea will soon be nearly impossible. CNN reports the U.S. Congress is moving ahead with bipartisan legislation that will enact a travel ban on Americans visiting North Korea.

The report states the law, if passed, will prohibit any form of tourism travel to the country, and necessary travel will mandate special permission and a license from the Treasury Department. The report comes after house representatives introduced the North Korea Travel Control Act.

“In recent years, there has been an increase in tourist travel to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea by citizens of Western countries, including the United States,” said Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff. “With increased tensions in North Korea, the danger that Americans will be detained for political reasons is greater than ever.”

CNN Money claims that of the 100,000 people who visit North Korea as tourists, 95 percent are Chinese, and international travel is extremely low. The policy is unique in that it not only prohibits American travel to a foreign nation, but it does so for the dangers presented to travelers. Potential detainment could set off a series of events starting with personal danger and resulting in political repercussions on a global level.
