New Zealand’s museum of contemporary art, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery set to debut the Len Lye Centre, the country’s first art museum dedicated to a single artist, this summer. Designed with curved exterior walls made of mirror-like stainless steel, the museum will also become the country’s first destination architecture linked to contemporary art.
Pioneering New Zealand filmmaker and kinetic artist Len Lye gifted his collection and archive to the Govett-Brewster in 1980, and the opening weekend of the new museum will celebrate the culmination of more than three decades of commitment to realizing a permanent home for his work.
Opened in 1970, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is Aotearoa New Zealand’s first and only contemporary art museum, dedicated to generating new artist projects, exhibitions, publications, events and discussions that stimulate ideas and enrich the imagination. Adjacent to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, the Len Lye Centre is slated to open July 25 as a combined art museum.
