It’s June, and time for the State of New York’s semi-annual Path Through History Weekend.  June 18–19, the state’s fascinating past will be revealed through 50 cultural and historic activities at museums, historic sites, military landmarks and cultural institutions featuring female luminaries, African American legacies, nature, food and explorations of battlefields and cemeteries.

A full, detailed list of activities and locations is available on the official Path Through History website. Some activities are virtual; advance reservations or tickets may be necessary.

Here’s a sampling of weekend highlights:

Canoe/Kayak the Germantown Waterfront (June 18)

Williamsburg Inn Review

You don’t have to love brass chandeliers or brocade to appreciate what Williamsburg Inn does best: delivering a polished, unpretentious stay amid America’s most iconic living history museum. This is where you check in for traditional luxury without feeling like you’re trapped in a time capsule. The Queen stayed here (twice), and so did Eisenhower, but you’re not here to make history. You’re here to enjoy it, on your own terms.

Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu

Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
