A new survey from Allianz Partners customers found they are growing more bullish on future travel plans, with more than two-thirds of customers planning to take a trip between now and November. A majority feel confident in resuming pre-COVID activity levels for travel, including a cruise by the end of 2021.
The number of customers planning trips in 2021 tripled in July, compared to February. Now, 66 percent of customers anticipate traveling by the end of October; when asked the same question in a similar survey in February 2021, 22 percent of customers felt they would travel within that same timeframe. Additionally, uncertainty over future travel dropped by more than half, with only 7 percent of customers responding in the July survey that they were not sure when they would next travel.
A majority of respondents, at 84 percent, are confident now about staying in hotels, with 79 percent confident flying on an airplane. Among other aspects of travel, confidence in staying in a rental property is at 78 percent; for train travel, 70 percent. More than half, at 53 percent, would feel comfortable to resume normal cruise activity levels by the end of 2021.
“Americans are regaining ground on travel confidence, and our latest survey revealed that two thirds of our customers plan to take a trip by November,” said Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications, Allianz Partners USA. “Confidence and certainty around travel is returning, and we’re seeing customers rebound to pre-pandemic interest levels, which has the potential to fuel travel enthusiasm into 2022.”
According to the survey, domestic travel remains the top choice for customers’ next trips; 55 percent plan to stay within the continental United States. Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawai’i are the second-most popular options, with 15 percent planning to travel to Europe.
The survey examined a random sample of 1,362 customers who purchased a policy Oct. 1, 2020–April 30, 2021. The survey was conducted July 1–25, and defined travel as a trip to a destination more than 100 miles from home and lasting for at least two nights.
