With 50 swish rooms spread over five Georgian townhouses in London’s West End Bloomsbury neighborhood, The Academy Hotel marks its debut as the latest property to join the exclusive YTL Hotels UK collection. Occupying a setting made famous by artists, philosophers, writers and intellectuals who made up The Bloomsbury Set, including Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and John Maynard Keynes, the hotel is close to the British Museum, Covent Garden, Soho, Leicester Square and shopping on Oxford Street.

Rooms feature high ceilings, marble bathrooms and sash windows, with cool vintage details that perfectly balance contemporary elements. The color and textile palette assembled by New York-based design firm Champalimaud includes leather, sumptuous velvets and deep jewel tones. All rooms are fitted with amenities such as tea and Nespresso coffee-making stations, flat-screen televisions, powered safes, complimentary minibars, toiletries by Aromatherapy Associates, comfy robes and slippers, terrestrial freeview channels and complimentary WiFi.

Shared spaces include the Alchemy Bar, where armchairs covered in olive-green velvet; whimsical, eye-catching wallpaper; and tables topped with marble fill a friendly space that spills out into a garden. Afternoon tea is served in The Courtyard and traditional English breakfast can be enjoyed in The Refectory. Guests can linger over coffee and cake in the library, where shelves are filled with a curated selection of books waiting to have their pages turned.

Review: Kimpton Hotel Palomar

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: Philadelphia was filling up with travelers, so I booked Kimpton Hotel Palomar due to its location in the heart of Center City — just off Samson Street, full of great restaurants, and a few blocks from The Union League (where I was attending an event) and City Hall. I parked around the corner; there are many options, and the hotel is also close to public transportation. I admired the lobby renovations that took place not too long ago, making this a hidden gem with a real Philadelphia feel. The doorman greeted me and held my bags, as I arrived in the morning for meetings before check- in. When I returned in the afternoon, check-in was swift with a friendly front desk team offering water and help with questions.
