Arton Capital’s Passport Index recently updated its rankings. The Index, created by the leading global advisory for resident and citizenship solutions, ranks national passports according to the cross-border access offered. Countries are ranked according to the number of countries a passport holder can visit without a visa or with a visa on arrival.

“Visa-free global mobility has become an important factor in today’s world,” said Armand Arton, founder and president, Arton Capital. “More and more people every year invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a second passport to offer better opportunity and security for their families.”

As of last week, Singapore overtook Germany for the top title, as Paraguay removed visa requirements for Singaporeans. Germany held the lead for several years, and many European countries were on top throughout the past. However, Asian countries are slowly gaining, with South Korea, Japan and Malaysia all making the Top 20.

“For the first time ever an Asian country has the most powerful passport in the world … It is a testament of Singapore’s inclusive diplomatic relations and effective foreign policy,” said Philippe May, managing director, Singapore, Arton Capital.

For comparison, the U.S. passport shares sixth place with Canada, Ireland and Malaysia. The U.S. passport’s power declined once President Trump took office, with countries like Turkey and the Central African Republic revoking visa-free status to passport holders.
