American Airlines is shaking up the way AAdvantage members earn award miles. Starting Aug. 1, members will earn award miles based on their ticket price, while elite members will earn additional miles based on their status level. The airline claims the new system will further reward its most loyal passengers. AAdvantage members will earn five award miles per dollar spent on airfare, gold members will earn seven award miles per dollar spent on airfare, platinum members will earn eight award miles per dollar spent on airfare and executive platinum members will earn 11 award miles per dollar spent on airfare. Award miles for travel on partner airlines will depend on flight distance and booking code. Changes are also coming for the way AAdvantage members earn elite status. Starting 2017, a fourth elite level is planned, called Platinum Pro. Platinum Pro members are between platinum and executive platinum members, and receive complimentary auto-requested upgrades within North America and between the United States and Central America, nine award miles per dollar, two free checked bags and oneworld sapphire status. Also in 2017, elite qualification requirements will include elite qualifying dollars. To reach gold status, members must have 25,000 elite qualifying miles or 30 elite qualifying segments, plus 3,000 elite qualifying dollars. For platinum status, members must have 50,000 elite qualifying miles or 60 elite qualifying segments, plus 6,000 elite qualifying dollars. Platinum Pro membership requires 75,000 elite qualifying miles or 90 elite qualifying segments, plus 9,000 elite qualifying dollars. Executive platinum membership requires 100,000 elite qualifying miles or 120 elite qualifying segments and 12,000 elite qualifying dollars.
