Art aficionados living in or traveling through New England will have a new museum to appreciate come February. The MassArt Art Museum opens Feb. 22, 2020, offering a new space for Bostonians and visitors to experience contemporary art, and free admission and programs.
“Game Changers: Video Games and Contemporary Art” joins an installation by Ghost of a Dream as inaugural exhibitions. “Game Changers” is a group exhibition by a number of artists: Paloma Dawkins, Cao Fei, Tracey Fullerton, Dan Hernandez, Nyamakop, MassArt professor Juan Obando, Momo Pixel, Skawennati and Brent Watanabe. “Valkyrie Mumbet” by Joana Vasconceles is also one of the opening exhibitions.
The non-collecting museum is also a teaching one, which will showcase different artists at varying points of their careers.
“MAAM is committed to educating and empowering the next generation of artists, both on campus and throughout the world,” said Lisa Tung, executive director, MAAM.
The new museum occupies an expanded and renovated space previously the Bakalar and Paine Galleries. The renovation was supported by way of a $12.5 million fund. Once the museum opens, it will be open all year long with expanded hours on certain days of the week.
The Massachusetts College of Art and Design was founded in 1873. The new art museum is its latest addition.
Boston is home to some of the best art museums in the country. When you visit MAAM, make sure to check out the Museum of Fine Arts and The Gardner Museum as well.
