Reimei Kobashi footbridge, which connects Kachidoki Station and Harumi 3-chome in Tokyo’s waterfront district, opened to the public in 2024 and has since received many design awards, including winning the Architectural Design Infrastructure category at the Architecture Master Prize 2025 competition, an international award recognizing excellence in architectural design. The footbridge was designed by Tokyo-based Hoshino Architects, with Hiroaki Hoshino as lead designer.

The footbridge, 280 feet long, crosses the Asashio Canal to Grand Marina Tokyo, with a soft arching design reminiscent of gentle waves rolling over the water’s surface. The continuous white structure of the bridge hovering above emphasizes the rhythm of the water’s surface through its subtle, undulating form. The shadow of the bridge, cast onto the water’s surface, enhances the imagination even more with a congregation of waves seeming to wash over one another.

The design, presenting one fluid motion from 3-D geometric changes, provides pedestrians walking across the bridge with a feeling of movement. Bridge lighting is programmed to change colors gradually depending on the season and day of the week. The different color combinations are designed to create a variety of impressions. In this way, the nightscope of this newly developed area, where the number of residents is increasing, can be enjoyed daily for its momentary colorful combinations and movements.

The Harumi 3-chome Project is a significant development initiative in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward. It aims to create a green network connecting local parks and a barrier-free pedestrian network that extends into the city. The project includes the Reimei Kobashi barrier-free pedestrian bridge,  connecting the complex to Harumi Daisan Park across the street, enhancing accessibility and connectivity within the community. The buildings’ design is inspired by the phenomenon of “wake waves” created on the water surface by ships, with different details creating a façade suitable as the gateway to the Harumi area. The complex also features an office tower and hotel, with the office and hotel buildings arranged in separate buildings.
