According to the National Parks Organization, more than 500 million straws are used each year worldwide, taking as long as 100 years to degrade. In light of this, the travel industry began shifting practices to more be eco-friendly.

Recently announced, Breezes Resort & Spa in the Bahamas, Hyatt Ziva and Zilara and Panama Jack Resorts all joined the #SkipTheStraw and #StopUsingStraws social media movements. The hashtags began in hopes of shedding light on the clean beaches initiative to preserve local wildlife and ecosystems from the harms of plastic waste.

Other accommodations joining on the plastic ban include boutique hotel One Aldwych in London. One Aldwych has done so far as to ban all plastic straws from restaurants including the Lobby Bar, Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar, Indigo and private dining and room service. The Lobby Bar replaced plastic with glass straws and olive pokes with bamboo sticks.

Even airlines synonymous with laid-back cocktails and island vibes jumped on the cause with Thai Airways banning all plastic straws from flights, with a few exceptions. Guests with handicaps or children and elderly travelers requiring a straw to eat or drink will have the option. Fiji Airways is working on a similar program.
