The Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel, Switzerland is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an exhibition of works by master of light Claude Monet, the founder of French Impressionism. Paintings featured in the exhibition focus on those created between 1880 and the early 20th century, including a few late period works that fall into his foray into Modernism. Illustrating his mastery of light, color and shadow, painting subjects range from Mediterranean landscapes, haystacks and bridges wrapped in fog to dramatic coastal scenes depicting the Atlantic.
The exhibition includes 15 works from private collections and 62 paintings on loan from leading museums in Europe, Japan and the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum in New York; the Tate London; the Musée d’Orsay in Paris; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The exhibition is on view until May 28.
