Manchester Airport will be the third United Kingdom airport to start charging a fee for passengers arriving by car. Fees will be instituted in June and will cost £3 for three minutes and £4 for 10 minutes.
The fees will kick in when passengers are dropped off in front of the terminals or at the airport’s train station. The airport hopes the fees will help curb congestion.
“As passenger numbers have grown we have increasingly experienced major congestion problems on our terminal forecourts,” Tricia Williams, COO, Manchester Airport, told the BBC. “The simple fact is our forecourts were not designed to handle the number of vehicles they do today.”
Other airports with similar fees have shuttles for passengers to get to the terminals. Taxis are decrying the fees, saying they will hurt business.
