From Tarzan the Ape Man to cutting-edge animated films, it’s all things cinema from Feb. 26–March 8 at the Luxembourg City Film Festival. Among this year’s most anticipated screenings is the black and white Episode of the Sea, the result of a two-year documentary collaboration between directors Lonnie van Brummelen and Siebren de Haan and the residents of Urk, a one-time island fishing village in the Netherlands now connected to the mainland, the result of land reclamation efforts. Residents balked at expectations to give up their life at sea to become farmers, and most continue to make a living as fishermen. The film explores the refusal of lifelong fishermen to let go of their trade.

Also receiving plenty of advance attention is director Esben Toft Jacobsen’s animated Beyond Beyond (original title: Johan und der Federkönig). In the highly imaginative film, Johan makes an unexpected sailing journey to search for his long-missing mother. The main festival venue is Mudam Auditorium, located within the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean at Park Drai Eechelen. Festival events include Meet the Pros at Ratskeller, Cercle Cité, with opportunities to chat with filmmakers and discuss art, technique and process.
