First opened in 1742 by George William Wilton, a seller of oysters, shrimp and cockles near Haymarket in London, Wiltons continued drawing diners with its delicious food for more than two centuries. This summer, Wiltons celebrates its 280th birthday and its place as one of London’s most beloved fine-dining establishments with a unique dining experience.
“Our original Oyster Rooms, Wiltons’ direct ancestor, had been serving shellfish and oysters to customers for 34 years before America declared independence in 1776,” commented Jason Phillips, director, Wilton’s Holdings. “We are delighted that our dedication to embodying the excellence of British dishes for the enjoyment of our customers has allowed us to prosper for the past 280 years. This is truly a magnificent achievement.”
The anniversary celebration, July 1–Aug. 31, features a seven-course dinner menu covering some of the restaurant’s finest dishes. At £280 per person, the experience includes wine, water and service. The service starts with a classic oyster dish as an homage to the humble beginnings of Wiltons.
Smoked salmon and caviar follow with a lobster bisque soon after. Guests also enjoy Dover sole, roast rack of lamb, peas and baby gem lettuce, green apple mousse and a choice of strawberry souffle or ice cream for dessert. Each course comes paired with French and English wines.
